Protecting Yourself from Overdraft (Insufficient Funds*) Fees

 How do overdrafts happen?

  • When you write a check,
  • Use your debit card to make a purchase, or
  • Make an automatic bill payment or other electronic payment

for more than the amount in your checking account.

A bank has the choice to either pay the amount or not.  If it pays the amount of the transaction, even if you don’t have enough money in your account, you may be charged an Insufficient Funds fee.  And the person or company that you were attempting to pay (landlord, utility company, etc.) may charge you a “returned check/returned ACH” fee – in addition to the fee a bank may charge.

How can you avoid an overdraft (Insufficient Funds) fee?

  • Keep track of how much money you have available in your checking account by recording checks and other payments in a register when you make the payment. Using online banking or mobile banking (application) makes it easy and convenient to check your account balance and available balance.
  • Pay attention to your electronic transactions including ATM withdrawals, debit card purchases and online payments.
  • Don’t forget about automatic payments you may set up for rent, mortgage, utility payments, credit card payments, etc.
  • Review your account activity frequently so you know which payments have posted to your account. Using online banking or mobile banking makes it easy and convenient to review transactions.
  • You can also check your available balance at an ATM machine.

Sometimes mistakes happen. If you do overdraw your account, deposit money into the account as soon as possible to cover the overdraft amount plus any fees.  You can also transfer money from another account you may have at the bank, such as a savings account, to your checking account.

What are some other ways to cover overdrafts?

  • Link your checking account to a savings account at the bank so funds can be transferred to your checking account to cover any overdrafts. Ask branch staff for assistance.

What should you do if you have a problem or complaint about an overdraft or fees that you have been charged?

  • If you have a complaint, first try to resolve the problem directly with the bank.
  • If you are unable to resolve the problem with the bank, you can file a complaint with one of the federal agencies responsible for enforcing consumer banking laws.

*Insufficient Funds fee is also known as a Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) fee.
